How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 88 = 13.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13.2 ÷ 88 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/88, so part = 15 × 88 ÷ 100 = 13.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*88. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13.2 is the 15% share of 88. The remaining 85% is 74.8, and the two parts add back up to 88.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $88 saves $13.2, so you pay $74.8.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 88 by 15% gives 101.2 and decreasing it by 15% gives 74.8. These do not cancel out: raising 88 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 86.02, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
