How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 90 = 36
- Check: Work backwards: 36 ÷ 90 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/90, so part = 40 × 90 ÷ 100 = 36. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
36 is the 40% share of 90. The remaining 60% is 54, and the two parts add back up to 90.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $90 saves $36, so you pay $54.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 90 by 40% gives 126 and decreasing it by 40% gives 54. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 75.6, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
