How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 3 = 0.48
- Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 3 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/3, so part = 16 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.48 is the 16% share of 3. The remaining 84% is 2.52, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $3 saves $0.48, so you pay $2.52.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 3 by 16% gives 3.48 and decreasing it by 16% gives 2.52. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 2.9232, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
