How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 85 = 21.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21.25 ÷ 85 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/85, so part = 25 × 85 ÷ 100 = 21.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21.25 is the 25% share of 85. The remaining 75% is 63.75, and the two parts add back up to 85.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $85 saves $21.25, so you pay $63.75.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 85 by 25% gives 106.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 63.75. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 79.6875, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
