How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 45 = 9
- Check: Work backwards: 9 ÷ 45 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/45, so part = 20 × 45 ÷ 100 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9 is the 20% share of 45. The remaining 80% is 36, and the two parts add back up to 45.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $45 saves $9, so you pay $36.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 45 by 20% gives 54 and decreasing it by 20% gives 36. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 43.2, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
