How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 6 = 0.96
- Check: Work backwards: 0.96 ÷ 6 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/6, so part = 16 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.96. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.96 is the 16% share of 6. The remaining 84% is 5.04, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $6 saves $0.96, so you pay $5.04.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 6 by 16% gives 6.96 and decreasing it by 16% gives 5.04. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 5.8464, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
