How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 35 = 21
- Check: Work backwards: 21 ÷ 35 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/35, so part = 60 × 35 ÷ 100 = 21. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
21 is the 60% share of 35. The remaining 40% is 14, and the two parts add back up to 35.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $35 saves $21, so you pay $14.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 35 by 60% gives 56 and decreasing it by 60% gives 14. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 22.4, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
