How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 20 = 3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 20 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/20, so part = 15 × 20 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3 is the 15% share of 20. The remaining 85% is 17, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $20 saves $3, so you pay $17.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 20 by 15% gives 23 and decreasing it by 15% gives 17. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 19.55, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 15. 15% of 20 and 20% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 20 ÷ 100 = 3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
