How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 8 = 1.28
- Check: Work backwards: 1.28 ÷ 8 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/8, so part = 16 × 8 ÷ 100 = 1.28. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.28 is the 16% share of 8. The remaining 84% is 6.72, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $8 saves $1.28, so you pay $6.72.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 8 by 16% gives 9.28 and decreasing it by 16% gives 6.72. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 7.7952, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
