How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 10 = 1
- Check: Work backwards: 1 ÷ 10 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/10, so part = 10 × 10 ÷ 100 = 1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1 is the 10% share of 10. The remaining 90% is 9, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $10 saves $1, so you pay $9.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 10 by 10% gives 11 and decreasing it by 10% gives 9. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 9.9, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
