How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 19 ÷ 100 = 0.19
  2. Multiply: 0.19 × 1 = 0.19
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.19 ÷ 1 × 100 = 19%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 19/100 = part/1, so part = 19 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.19. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =19%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.19 is the 19% share of 1. The remaining 81% is 0.81, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 19% off an item priced $1 saves $0.19, so you pay $0.81.

Adding and taking away 19%

Increasing 1 by 19% gives 1.19 and decreasing it by 19% gives 0.81. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 19% and then lowering the result by 19% ends at 0.9639, because the second 19% is taken of a bigger number.
