How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 45 = 6.75
- Check: Work backwards: 6.75 ÷ 45 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/45, so part = 15 × 45 ÷ 100 = 6.75. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.75 is the 15% share of 45. The remaining 85% is 38.25, and the two parts add back up to 45.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $45 saves $6.75, so you pay $38.25.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 45 by 15% gives 51.75 and decreasing it by 15% gives 38.25. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 43.9875, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
