How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 22 = 0.44
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.44 ÷ 22 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/22, so part = 2 × 22 ÷ 100 = 0.44. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.44 is the 2% share of 22. The remaining 98% is 21.56, and the two parts add back up to 22.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $22 saves $0.44, so you pay $21.56.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 22 by 2% gives 22.44 and decreasing it by 2% gives 21.56. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 21.9912, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
