How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 65 = 52
- Check: Work backwards: 52 ÷ 65 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/65, so part = 80 × 65 ÷ 100 = 52. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
52 is the 80% share of 65. The remaining 20% is 13, and the two parts add back up to 65.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $65 saves $52, so you pay $13.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 65 by 80% gives 117 and decreasing it by 80% gives 13. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 23.4, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
