How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 27 = 0.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.54 ÷ 27 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/27, so part = 2 × 27 ÷ 100 = 0.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*27. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.54 is the 2% share of 27. The remaining 98% is 26.46, and the two parts add back up to 27.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $27 saves $0.54, so you pay $26.46.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 27 by 2% gives 27.54 and decreasing it by 2% gives 26.46. These do not cancel out: raising 27 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 26.9892, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
