How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 60 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 60 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/60, so part = 20 × 60 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 20% share of 60. The remaining 80% is 48, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $60 saves $12, so you pay $48.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 60 by 20% gives 72 and decreasing it by 20% gives 48. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 57.6, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 60% of 20. 20% of 60 and 60% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 60 ÷ 100 = 12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
