How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 27 ÷ 100 = 0.27
  2. Multiply: 0.27 × 2 = 0.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.54 ÷ 2 × 100 = 27%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 27/100 = part/2, so part = 27 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =27%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.54 is the 27% share of 2. The remaining 73% is 1.46, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 27% off an item priced $2 saves $0.54, so you pay $1.46.

Adding and taking away 27%

Increasing 2 by 27% gives 2.54 and decreasing it by 27% gives 1.46. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 27% and then lowering the result by 27% ends at 1.8542, because the second 27% is taken of a bigger number.
