How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 8 = 0.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.16 ÷ 8 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/8, so part = 2 × 8 ÷ 100 = 0.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.16 is the 2% share of 8. The remaining 98% is 7.84, and the two parts add back up to 8.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $8 saves $0.16, so you pay $7.84.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 8 by 2% gives 8.16 and decreasing it by 2% gives 7.84. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 7.9968, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 8% of 2. 2% of 8 and 8% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 8 ÷ 100 = 0.16), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
