How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 2 = 0.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.16 ÷ 2 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/2, so part = 8 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.16 is the 8% share of 2. The remaining 92% is 1.84, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $2 saves $0.16, so you pay $1.84.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 2 by 8% gives 2.16 and decreasing it by 8% gives 1.84. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 1.9872, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 8. 8% of 2 and 2% of 8 are always equal (both are 8 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.16), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
