How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 25 = 15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 25 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/25, so part = 60 × 25 ÷ 100 = 15. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15 is the 60% share of 25. The remaining 40% is 10, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $25 saves $15, so you pay $10.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 25 by 60% gives 40 and decreasing it by 60% gives 10. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 16, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
