How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 73 = 14.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.6 ÷ 73 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/73, so part = 20 × 73 ÷ 100 = 14.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*73. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.6 is the 20% share of 73. The remaining 80% is 58.4, and the two parts add back up to 73.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $73 saves $14.6, so you pay $58.4.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 73 by 20% gives 87.6 and decreasing it by 20% gives 58.4. These do not cancel out: raising 73 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 70.08, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
