How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 55 = 5.5
- Check: Work backwards: 5.5 ÷ 55 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/55, so part = 10 × 55 ÷ 100 = 5.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.5 is the 10% share of 55. The remaining 90% is 49.5, and the two parts add back up to 55.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $55 saves $5.5, so you pay $49.5.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 55 by 10% gives 60.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 49.5. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 54.45, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 55% of 10. 10% of 55 and 55% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 55 ÷ 100 = 5.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
