How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 20 = 4.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.2 ÷ 20 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/20, so part = 21 × 20 ÷ 100 = 4.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.2 is the 21% share of 20. The remaining 79% is 15.8, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $20 saves $4.2, so you pay $15.8.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 20 by 21% gives 24.2 and decreasing it by 21% gives 15.8. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 19.118, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
