How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
- Multiply: 0.21 × 6 = 1.26
- Check: Work backwards: 1.26 ÷ 6 × 100 = 21%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/6, so part = 21 × 6 ÷ 100 = 1.26. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =21%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.26 is the 21% share of 6. The remaining 79% is 4.74, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 21% off an item priced $6 saves $1.26, so you pay $4.74.
Adding and taking away 21%
Increasing 6 by 21% gives 7.26 and decreasing it by 21% gives 4.74. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 5.7354, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
