How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 250 = 50
- Check: Work backwards: 50 ÷ 250 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/250, so part = 20 × 250 ÷ 100 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*250. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
50 is the 20% share of 250. The remaining 80% is 200, and the two parts add back up to 250.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $250 saves $50, so you pay $200.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 250 by 20% gives 300 and decreasing it by 20% gives 200. These do not cancel out: raising 250 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 240, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 250% of 20. 20% of 250 and 250% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 250 ÷ 100 = 50), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
