How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
  2. Multiply: 0.9 × 25 = 22.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 90%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/25, so part = 90 × 25 ÷ 100 = 22.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.5 is the 90% share of 25. The remaining 10% is 2.5, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 90% off an item priced $25 saves $22.5, so you pay $2.5.

Adding and taking away 90%

Increasing 25 by 90% gives 47.5 and decreasing it by 90% gives 2.5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 4.75, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
