How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 12 = 2.64
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.64 ÷ 12 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/12, so part = 22 × 12 ÷ 100 = 2.64. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.64 is the 22% share of 12. The remaining 78% is 9.36, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $12 saves $2.64, so you pay $9.36.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 12 by 22% gives 14.64 and decreasing it by 22% gives 9.36. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 11.4192, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
