65

How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Multiply: 0.3 × 50 = 15
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 50 × 100 = 30%.

In a spreadsheet: =30%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15 is the 30% share of 50. The remaining 70% is 35, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 30% off an item priced $50 saves $15, so you pay $35.

Adding and taking away 30%

Increasing 50 by 30% gives 65 and decreasing it by 30% gives 35. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 45.5, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
