How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 80 = 20
- Check: Work backwards: 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/80, so part = 25 × 80 ÷ 100 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
20 is the 25% share of 80. The remaining 75% is 60, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $80 saves $20, so you pay $60.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 80 by 25% gives 100 and decreasing it by 25% gives 60. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 75, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
