How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 51 = 11.22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.22 ÷ 51 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/51, so part = 22 × 51 ÷ 100 = 11.22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.22 is the 22% share of 51. The remaining 78% is 39.78, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $51 saves $11.22, so you pay $39.78.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 51 by 22% gives 62.22 and decreasing it by 22% gives 39.78. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 48.5316, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
