How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 22 = 11.22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.22 ÷ 22 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/22, so part = 51 × 22 ÷ 100 = 11.22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.22 is the 51% share of 22. The remaining 49% is 10.78, and the two parts add back up to 22.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $22 saves $11.22, so you pay $10.78.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 22 by 51% gives 33.22 and decreasing it by 51% gives 10.78. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 16.2778, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
