How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 10 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 10 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/10, so part = 60 × 10 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 60% share of 10. The remaining 40% is 4, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $10 saves $6, so you pay $4.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 10 by 60% gives 16 and decreasing it by 60% gives 4. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 6.4, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
