How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 98 = 21.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21.56 ÷ 98 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/98, so part = 22 × 98 ÷ 100 = 21.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21.56 is the 22% share of 98. The remaining 78% is 76.44, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $98 saves $21.56, so you pay $76.44.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 98 by 22% gives 119.56 and decreasing it by 22% gives 76.44. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 93.2568, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
