How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 55 = 8.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.25 ÷ 55 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/55, so part = 15 × 55 ÷ 100 = 8.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.25 is the 15% share of 55. The remaining 85% is 46.75, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $55 saves $8.25, so you pay $46.75.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 55 by 15% gives 63.25 and decreasing it by 15% gives 46.75. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 53.7625, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
