How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Multiply: 0.3 × 60 = 18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18 ÷ 60 × 100 = 30%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = part/60, so part = 30 × 60 ÷ 100 = 18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18 is the 30% share of 60. The remaining 70% is 42, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 30% off an item priced $60 saves $18, so you pay $42.

Adding and taking away 30%

Increasing 60 by 30% gives 78 and decreasing it by 30% gives 42. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 54.6, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
