How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
  2. Multiply: 0.24 × 2 = 0.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 2 × 100 = 24%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/2, so part = 24 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =24%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.48 is the 24% share of 2. The remaining 76% is 1.52, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 24% off an item priced $2 saves $0.48, so you pay $1.52.

Adding and taking away 24%

Increasing 2 by 24% gives 2.48 and decreasing it by 24% gives 1.52. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 1.8848, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.
