How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 24 = 0.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 24 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/24, so part = 2 × 24 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.48 is the 2% share of 24. The remaining 98% is 23.52, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $24 saves $0.48, so you pay $23.52.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 24 by 2% gives 24.48 and decreasing it by 2% gives 23.52. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 23.9904, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
