How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 20 = 8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8 ÷ 20 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/20, so part = 40 × 20 ÷ 100 = 8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8 is the 40% share of 20. The remaining 60% is 12, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $20 saves $8, so you pay $12.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 20 by 40% gives 28 and decreasing it by 40% gives 12. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 16.8, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
