How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 1 = 0.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.25 ÷ 1 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/1, so part = 25 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.25 is the 25% share of 1. The remaining 75% is 0.75, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $1 saves $0.25, so you pay $0.75.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 1 by 25% gives 1.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 0.75. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 0.9375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
