How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 25 = 0.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/25, so part = 1 × 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.25 is the 1% share of 25. The remaining 99% is 24.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $25 saves $0.25, so you pay $24.75.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 25 by 1% gives 25.25 and decreasing it by 1% gives 24.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 24.9975, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
