How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 17 = 4.25
- Check: Work backwards: 4.25 ÷ 17 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/17, so part = 25 × 17 ÷ 100 = 4.25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.25 is the 25% share of 17. The remaining 75% is 12.75, and the two parts add back up to 17.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $17 saves $4.25, so you pay $12.75.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 17 by 25% gives 21.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 12.75. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 15.9375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
