How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 300 = 75
- Check: Work backwards: 75 ÷ 300 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/300, so part = 25 × 300 ÷ 100 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
75 is the 25% share of 300. The remaining 75% is 225, and the two parts add back up to 300.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $300 saves $75, so you pay $225.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 300 by 25% gives 375 and decreasing it by 25% gives 225. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 281.25, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
