How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 43 = 10.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.75 ÷ 43 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/43, so part = 25 × 43 ÷ 100 = 10.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.75 is the 25% share of 43. The remaining 75% is 32.25, and the two parts add back up to 43.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $43 saves $10.75, so you pay $32.25.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 43 by 25% gives 53.75 and decreasing it by 25% gives 32.25. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 40.3125, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
