How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 70 = 7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7 ÷ 70 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/70, so part = 10 × 70 ÷ 100 = 7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7 is the 10% share of 70. The remaining 90% is 63, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $70 saves $7, so you pay $63.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 70 by 10% gives 77 and decreasing it by 10% gives 63. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 69.3, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
