How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 5 = 0.5
- Check: Work backwards: 0.5 ÷ 5 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/5, so part = 10 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.5 is the 10% share of 5. The remaining 90% is 4.5, and the two parts add back up to 5.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $5 saves $0.5, so you pay $4.5.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 5 by 10% gives 5.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 4.5. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 4.95, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 5% of 10. 10% of 5 and 5% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 5 ÷ 100 = 0.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
