How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 44 = 11
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11 ÷ 44 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/44, so part = 25 × 44 ÷ 100 = 11. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*44. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11 is the 25% share of 44. The remaining 75% is 33, and the two parts add back up to 44.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $44 saves $11, so you pay $33.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 44 by 25% gives 55 and decreasing it by 25% gives 33. These do not cancel out: raising 44 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 41.25, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
