How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 44 ÷ 100 = 0.44
  2. Multiply: 0.44 × 25 = 11
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11 ÷ 25 × 100 = 44%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 44/100 = part/25, so part = 44 × 25 ÷ 100 = 11. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =44%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11 is the 44% share of 25. The remaining 56% is 14, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 44% off an item priced $25 saves $11, so you pay $14.

Adding and taking away 44%

Increasing 25 by 44% gives 36 and decreasing it by 44% gives 14. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 44% and then lowering the result by 44% ends at 20.16, because the second 44% is taken of a bigger number.
