How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 75 = 7.5
- Check: Work backwards: 7.5 ÷ 75 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/75, so part = 10 × 75 ÷ 100 = 7.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.5 is the 10% share of 75. The remaining 90% is 67.5, and the two parts add back up to 75.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $75 saves $7.5, so you pay $67.5.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 75 by 10% gives 82.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 67.5. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 74.25, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
