How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 53 = 13.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13.25 ÷ 53 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/53, so part = 25 × 53 ÷ 100 = 13.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13.25 is the 25% share of 53. The remaining 75% is 39.75, and the two parts add back up to 53.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $53 saves $13.25, so you pay $39.75.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 53 by 25% gives 66.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 39.75. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 49.6875, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
