How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 15 = 2.25
- Check: Work backwards: 2.25 ÷ 15 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/15, so part = 15 × 15 ÷ 100 = 2.25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.25 is the 15% share of 15. The remaining 85% is 12.75, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $15 saves $2.25, so you pay $12.75.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 15 by 15% gives 17.25 and decreasing it by 15% gives 12.75. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 14.6625, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
